Procedure for Collection of 24-hour and 2-hour Uri
Procedure for Collection of 24-hour and 2-hour Urine Specimens
Collection containers are available in the Chemistry Department of the laboratory. When picking up containers, personnel must know what test has been ordered so that the proper preserative, if any, can be added.
Procedure for Collection of 24-hour Urine Specimen
Have the patient empty his bladder. Discard this specimen and note the time.
Collect all urine for the next 24 hours.
At the end of the 24-hour period, have the patient empty his bladder again and add this specimen to the collection.
Procedure for Collection of 2-hour Urine Specimen
Have the patient empty his bladder. Discard this specimen and note the time.
At the end of the 2-hours, have the patient void again and save the specimen. If the patient must void before the 2-hour interval is complete, save this specimen as part of the collection.
Notes
Never
let a patient void directly into a collection container.
Collect
all urine. If there is an accident, start the collection again.
Store
the specimen on ice or refrigerate.
