Various types of infections can affect your vagina and vulva. The term vaginitis is used to describe any number of infections or inflammations affecting the vagina. Vulvovaginitis refers to an inflammation of both the vagina and vulva. Some women may be surprised to know that not all infections are sexually transmitted. Infections usually result from the presence of certain organisms, including viruses, yeast, bacteria and irritants found in products such as perfumes and creams, chemicals and clothing. Some of these infections are sexually transmitted, but you can contract an infection without having sex as well. The symptoms of vaginitis vary from woman to woman, and sometimes symptoms are very difficult to detect if they are present at all. Commonly, infections are characterized by abnormal discharge, burning or irritation during urination, itchiness around the vagina and discomfort during intercourse.
