Problems
remembering and difficulty concentrating are natural parts of the
menopausal process. There is no known cause or connection of these
symptoms, but the majority of women experience some form of thinking
problems with menopause. Many women are worried at first when they
begin to experience these symptoms, fearing they are signs that
they are developing dementia or Alzheimer’s. This is not the case,
although lower levels of estrogen have been linked with Alzheimer’s.
Many women experience short-term memory loss as part of the menopausal
process, it is natural and not usually a sign of a more serious problem.
Some believe that problems with memory and cognition are associated
with the stress that comes from menopause and dealing with other
physical symptoms. Some believe that this is just a natural part
of the aging process, less closely related to menopause. If you are
concerned about changes in your mental capacity, many experts recommend
keeping your mind engaged and stimulated, as this can help you prevent
any serious changes. That might mean picking up a crossword puzzle…or
going back to school!
