You should go to the dentist twice a year. Once every six months, every teenage girl should sit in the dentist’s chair and get her teeth cleaned and examined by a professional dentist. Just like any other trip to the doctor, the dentist’s visit is important for keeping up with your health and preventing any major problems down the road.

At the dentist, you will get your teeth cleaned. Although it’s uncomfortable sitting there with your mouth open wide and with somebody’s hand moving around inside, it feels really good afterwards when your teeth are sparkling, smooth and super-clean. Your dentist also takes a gander in your mouth, to check for gum issues and other visible problems. You will probably have an x-ray taken so the dentist can see if you have any cavities. A cavity is a rotten, germy hole in your tooth. It's rotten because germs and plaque built up on that spot and weren't cleaned off regularly. If the dentist finds a cavity, you’re going to have to schedule another visit to the dentist to get it filled. This procedure involves a drill to remove the rotten part of the tooth. Then the dentist will put a filler in there to plug the hole left after removing the cavity. Cleaning out those rotten spots was uncomfortable in the Dark Ages, but now your dentist can numb the area around the tooth being worked on so you won’t feel a thing.
