Many girls your age think that an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) is only for women who are thinking of becoming pregnant. But that’s not true. An OB/GYN is a physician who specializes in treating the reproductive systems of girls and women. You may need to see an OB/GYN for a Pap test or pelvic exam if you are having menstrual or other problems with your reproductive system. Once you become sexually active or each age 21, you also should begin seeing an OB/GYN each year for an annual Pap test and pelvic exam. You might be afraid to ask about the OB/GYN, or embarrassed about what will happen at your appointment. There is no need to worry. Many girls your age feel the same way, and most OB/GYNs are very understanding with teens.
