the procedure achieves the desired effect of making a woman’s
breasts appear larger, there are some risks associated. The surgery is performed
by sticking solution-filled sacs into incisions at the bottom of
the breast or the armpit or the lower edge of the areola. The implant
is adjusted to shape and size and then the incision is closed with
stitches. Breast augmentation is surrounded by controversy, particularly
regarding the safety of silicone implants. The controversy over the
connection between the implants and connective tissue disease has
not been resolved. Most surgeries involve saline-filled implants
today. Saline is easily absorbed by the body if it leaks. Some women
choose to have breast lifts, or mastopexy, which is done at the same
time as breast enlargement or to natural breasts. Excess skin from
the bottom of the breast is removed and the rest of the breast is
tightened and brought together to give the appearance of a “lifted” breast.
Also, some women choose to get breast reduction if they are afflicted
with a cumbersome, over-sized chest. If the size of your chest causes
back pain, you might be able to get insurance coverage for breast
reduction.
